The Battle of the Somme lasted from July 1916 to November 1916. It was easily one of the worst battles ever fought. This battle took place at the Somme River,which runs through Europe. The opposing armies fought in a line of trenches over 960 Kilometers long. The trenches stretched from the Belgian Coast to the Frontiers of Switzerland. to see a line of German forces a little over 500 meters away. As they ran into the line of fire men would drop rapidly. It would be a miracle to survive longer than one minutes in that area. About Half way down the hill was a tree known as the “Danger Tree.” It was given that name because German shrapnel was very dangerous at that point. The Tree was preserved and is still there today.
