Top 5 iPhone/iPad Apps for Students

Although technology can sometimes be a distraction, it can also be an excellent tool. With students using cell phones and tablets more than ever, it would be appropriate to share how some tech-savvy students are using these devices. Below is a list of the top 5 apps for students.

1. Evernote

Evernote is a great app and all students should take advantage of its capabilities. At its core, Evernote is an organizational tool that lets you save web clips, notes, videos, voice recordings and assign it to various folders/projects.  One of the best features of Evernote is that it synchs automatically with all of your devices via the cloud! The best part-Evernote is free!

2. Flashcards plus

This is a great, no-frills flashcard app. It’s just like real flashcards except it’s for your device!  Now you can bring your work with you everywhere without having to remember your flashcards. Perfect for studying vocabulary or memorizing facts on the go.

3. Flipboard

What a fantastic app! Every student should create a Flipboard account and use it on their smart phone or tablet. Flipboard creates a magazine-style news feed based on your selected interests. It’s a fun way of encouraging reading.

4. Google Docs

This is is the best app for students and teachers. Google documents is an online word processor that lets you create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The Google Docs interface is very similar to the Microsoft Office programs. What makes Google Docs so unique is that it lets you instantly store and share all of your created documents online via the cloud. This is great for group work because students and teachers can share information effortlessly!

5. Voice recorder

Most phones nowadays are equipped with a voice recorder. Consider using it for tough classes! For instance if you know you have problems with chemistry, it might help to record the lecture! As always, you should always ask your teacher before doing so!

Not all apps are useless or are “time-wasters”. Some apps have a lot of educational value.

As a teacher who offers tutoring in New York City, I think we should embrace technology in the classroom not shun it.
